Tropical Frangipani Scent

Nothing registered when I first heard the name frangipani.  I thought, "What is that?  Is that a tree?  Or a flower?"  Little did I know that I have actually seen this before.

Frangipanis are commonly known as plumeria.  Now, did that name sound familiar now?  They are those pretty and fragrant flowers that are often seen in yellow or white although there are times that they come in the shade of pink and orange.  It usually has five silky petals that spiral into a long bud.  They are called differently in several parts of the world which is probably the reason why it took a while before I recognized it.  For example, it is called as Pomelia in Italy, Tipanier in Tahiti, Kemboja kuning in Malaysia, Phool in India and Kalachuchi in the Philippines.

Frangipani in LEIS

This tree is native to Mexico and the Caribbean but it's often associated with the tropical islands or Hawaii and Tahiti.  Can you picture them now?   One of the characteristics of Frangipani is that they are able to maintain their colour and fragrance longer.  These flowers are used in making leis to mark important events such as marriage and birth.  Because of their bright colours, they make attractive eye-catching leis.  To make them, the flowers are soaked in water for 10 minutes, dried and then put into a string.
